This year I will be in Indonesia for the Toba Caldera festival as race director and guide of the kayakers who want to participate. Participation is reserved for class IV-V paddlers with safe roll.

The Ashan is an incredible river that flows in North Sumatra, an island of Indonesia. With its 180mc/s of warm water guaranteed by the emission of Lake Toba, it is a volume river, with practically continuous rapids of 4-5 class. About 25km of river are navigable and the last stretch is characterized by a beautiful gorge immersed in the grade III tropical forest.

The "guided pack" includes guided descents and lessons during the week held by Michele Ramazza.

For the more competitive, the race includes big prizes with $ 10,000 in prize money, but you don't have to compete if you don't want to.

There will be walks to local waterfalls, scooter tours and swims in the forest.

We will and up the trip with a visit of the lake Toba, spending a coupple of nights in a fancy hotel there.

The weather in November - December is tropical hot, with occasional rains. For the river, short sleeves are recommended, but a light jacket can be useful for those who suffer the cold.

The event that will take place from 25 November 2022 to 6 December 2022. Different all-inclusive packages are proposed for athletes, recreational kayakes interested in guided descents and non-kayaker companions.

All the organization, transportation, accommodation and meals are handled by the local team. The accommodation is quite spartan but certainly representative of local culture and customs.
You will be able to do several daily descents as the canoeists will be accommodated right on the river in the middle of the most interesting parts to navigate.

In short, lots of kayaking and easy life.

Flying to Medan

All you have to do is book your flights. The most common way to get to Medan is to fly to Kuala Lumpur, and then buy a separate ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Medan with Air Asia.

Make sure you have at least 5 hours of layover so that you have time to exit the airport and take a 10-minute bus that can load the canoe, which will take you to the other Air Asia domestic terminal.

It is necessary to bring your own canoe with the possibility of reselling it on the spot if you find any local willing to buy it. Air Asia does not officially fly canoes, but if you cover it and say it is a wave ski and buy sports luggage there is usually no problem.

I'm aware of the problems of 2019 but the event organization has guaranteed a professional service and all the prizes. I have been in contact with them and they are working hard and professionaly. It's going to be epic this time.
